    CBC Calgary is on Expressvu.

In all fairness to SC, its not realy their fault. Its do to TRS spce.
True they could add more channels by compression(don't know if this would affect the whole stellitte or those TRS being compressed).

But still alot of the channels you mention especialy the ethnics where most of their subs are in either the VANCOUVER/Victori GTA, Toronto GTA & Montreal GTA(not sure oof the wethnic pop in Edmonton,Calgary,Winnipeg or Otawa really is or what the pop is).

As for the french services, let face the magority are in Quebec, with the Ottawa.National Capital Region/Eastern Ontario being next with the most Francohone market outside Quebec followed by either I hink its Novaa Scotia? or is it New Brinswick which is home to the Arcadian Francohone market not sure which.

As for he English locals well the Omni ones are given, as for the Specialty ones thats moreof Rogers tring to get the most channels possible to say "Look at everything we carry, you can't get these on BEV or SC" its more of marketing tool.

Hate to admit it, cable wil always have "more space" the only way BEV in this case can really compete is going by mulit sat system IR

    72.5 eat only(locals & Specialty channels)
    82 east only(ethnic &Speacilty channels)
    91 east & west(HD-MPEG 4 & VU/PPV)
?? west only(if they could get spot, same as 72)
?? west only(if they could get a spot, sam as 82)

SC would have yto do something simular.

Sorry Tom, I have to disagree. They want to be in the satellite business, then they should find space to add more channels, whether that means another satellite or leasing more transponder space, whatever- that's their problem not the consumer's.

I am not saying they should add every single channel I have listed that they don't carry, but there may be some that customers demand, but since they have 'no more room' then they can't add those. Personally I don't think they need every single local channel that exists but blaim the stupid CRTC on that one. Look in the U.S., there are hundreds of locals, how much wasted satellite space is that just to add stupid locals that you could get OTA with an antenna. If they weren't forced to add this stuff their would be more room to add channels customers want and also others like sports packs that might bring them more revenue.

Most of the channels they don't carry are crap, but their may be a few that are in demand, which is what SC looks at when adding channels. Only the channels with the most demand get added.

As for your other points, SC & Evu are NATIONAL services, they serve the entire country. So it doesn't matter if the ethnic population is largest in Toronto or French population is largest in Quebec, they should have channels that cater to everyone. This is why I say their should only be 1 DTH company, there is not a big enough population in Canada to sustain two companies. Satellite business is expensive, you need to keep launching satelites or leasing room on other satellites to keep pace. If there was only one then the space used up by both SC & Evu would be available to the one company, more room to add more channels and less compression. They could also use spotbeams that focus on one specific location, for french & multicultural channels, just like Dishnet & DirecTV do for locals in the U.S.

Oh well, I thought the list would be a cool idea, so people know what is and isn't carried and can decide which one is best for them.

    I guess

On a side note I may be getting rid of BEV & SC and going just with Rogers.

If I do they who;e system may go real cheap

    9200
    6100
    4500
    4100
    3100(4)
    2700
20" Dish(one that came with 9200 with SW 44 Switch one that came with 9200 and LNBs)
2 KU SAT SW 44 Switches
    4 sat spliters
    1 Multi switch(Poweed)4 outlet
    1 SW 21 switch

all this probally for $1000-$1500 if I can get it, Thats if I decide to sell. The SC is going to a cousin if I sell that to.

Star Choice is making money ........ that's the reality. You seem to be confusing the fact that Bell ExpressVu has been riding along on Telesat's literally free bandwidth as their satellite transponders were not purchased/leased by third parties. Why wouldn't they dramatically increase the amount of HD channels consuming otherwise quite expensive bandwidth for channels with no real rate of return? Meanwhile, that puts pressure on Star Choice to lease transponder space from Telesat because consumers like you seem to think that Star Choice has some kind of obligation to endlessly add more dreck to their line up just to keep up with Bell.

There are only a few HD channels that BEV offers that I wish Star Choice did, but certainly the trade off for simsubbing isn't remotely close to motivating me to switch. Star Choice wants to be in the satellite business to make money. Bell is using their losses from ExpressVu and Telesat to grow a powerful new business unit on the back of tax write-offs from more profitable telecommunication activity. More power to them for a successful strategy that ensures competition within the industry benefits all Canadians.

I do not look forward to a future where only one satellite company controls the airwaves ........ as consumers, we'll all pay dearly.

    *C and Bev

I agree, there are a few channels on bev that I wish *c would carry, I let the vp line know what channels, awaiting his response,
as a southern sub, I like *c because of
1.time shifting ( not on us sat)
    2. east & west coast network feeds ( not on us sats)
    ( only local nets on)
    3. HD us nets ( hd nets not avaible to me on sat) local cable hd us nets cost 12.95 per month extra , *c gives them to you at no additional charge.
4.. Live radio ( not on us nets) ( my local ota radio sucks)
5 Movie network kind of liking having hbo & cinemax together but not as expensive and not as crappy.
    6. Late night porn on movie net. and ppv porn .. ok i admit I like to watch porn on occasion... soft porn at 15.95 ppv.. local cable..
porn much more expensive on us sat than Canadian.
no blanket sim sub on *c plus amc, turner movies, msnbc,
live radio, low cost hd, great customer service, friendly to southern subs, makes me stick to *c over the few channels
    I want with bev.
Crap is crap in hd or sd, US or Canadian.

Exactly the way I feel as well and why I am still a SC sub and have not even considered going back to BEV. Avoiding simsubs is just that important to me.

  9. #9
One of the big or perhaps biggest reason that I went with * was the issue of simsubbing.

There is a limit to acceptable bandwidth and I hope that the most popular channels are considered first in line for that bandwidth. Quantity is not always better; it is usually at the cost of quality of signal.

I'm kinda suprised that ExpressVu subs aren't requesting these US channels
