Some friends & I were talking about real HD programming. Take NBC for example, if it is a station that is hd is most of the programming upconverted? If so why doesn't it follow the crap in, crap out story? Like not all the programming is really hd.
Or take Showtime(the channel) not all those movies were filmed in hd so how will the picture look?
We were also talking about citytv-hd, 90% of those shows won't really be hd so how would the picture look?

All network , at least for now are mostly upconverts. For the most part it is only prime time programing with the exception of Leno , Olyimpics , etc. Your take on crap in crap out is all in the eyes of the beholder.Yes it's an upconvert and yes it is no where near HD but it is much better than SD so to speak. And you also need to understand there are two types of HD right now, film based and video based. Both HD but both very different from each other.

Showtime , TMN , HBO , HDNet show very little HD movies as far as how they were shot. Most come from film and then transfered to HD.The picture, when done right , is fabulous ,film or video.
Again , as far as CityTv is concerned , it will look very good compared to SD but that's not to say that alot of CityTV will not be HD .They could start showing all their original programming in HD , News , FT , etc.. in HD.

Thanks Geoff
Only having a loaner 6000 from time to time i don't get to check alot of hd out. I found the demo loop what i would expect for real quality hd. I kinda found the rest sort of grainy.

Grain depends a lot on the source. Many programs and movies choose to emphasise it.
Upconverts done at the network level (CBS and NBC have full-time upconverted or HD feeds to their affiliates) are generally equivalent to progressive scan DVD quality. If we had never seen HD most of us would be very impressed by upconverts.
Watching Leno, CSI and their commercials will give you a good overview of the current "state of the art" for HD and upconverts. We're still far from seeing the full potential of the format which is 1080 progressive on screens capable of displaying it.
