Just wondering how the purchase went?. I have not seen this set yet -- I've seen the smaller version (is it 51?) as well as the 47" and 53" Panasonic. Can anyone comment on the quality of the Panasonic's compared to the Sony? I was quite impressed with the Panasonic but didn'thave anything to compare it to.

Yup, the Sony WS500 57" is what I bought.
I thought I would have it by now but it hasn't shown up at the store yet..grrrr. No HD this weekend for me. (sob)
I even called SC this morning to switch on their HD channels for me today.
Would it be too rude to ask what you paid???

Good for you. Now go out and buy an Avia disk so that you can get setup properly after you get it connected.
Paul
I checked out your model at the Sony Store today in Toronto -- looks like a nice set by they seemed pretty set on wanting me to pay 4495 (list) He hinted he might move a bit when I showed I was ready but not close to what you paid. Anybody else pay in the same range for this set?
I was amazed that Sony Store was demoing all their HDTV's off one non progressive scan CD player split several times -- it looked good but not incredible. Also they had no HDTV source to show what it would look like. I'll bet DDire uses a better display method than this.
By the way -- what is a AVIA disk?

SMSAT,
I paid $3700 for my KPH57W40 last December at Sears. If you live in Toronto, keep an eye out at either The Bay or Sears, particularly when they have their 10/15% off sales. They routinely give a 10% discount if you complete one of their credit card applications.
Avia is a DVD that is used to properly set up your TV and surround sound system. It contains all kinds of instructions, and test patterns so that you can get optimal results from your system.

And where do buy this DVD & are the TV TECHs that will do this for you.
pauldryan

Try A&B Sound or Future Shop. I got mine at A&B Sound.
There are two versions of Avia. The older version is intended for those that are prepared to go into the service functions of their televisions and is more expensive, as I recall about $79 for the DVD. This is the same DVD used by professional calibrators to set up televisions, projectors, etc.
The newer version, only released earlier this year is called Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune Up, and is priced at about $25.00 for the DVD. This one is done for people who have no technical skills related to home theater setup and does not require any specialized tools. It also contains a slew of test patterns at the end for those that may wish to experiment to a more sophisticated level.
Aside from your TV's picture quality, most people don't seem to realize that the room's acoustics have a dramatic impact on how their system sounds. That is why so many people become dissatisfied with the performance of their high priced stereo systems that sounded so good in the store. You would be surprised at how much of an improvement can be realized with your existing surround system simply by tuning up with a cheap Radio Shack sound level meter and the disk.

I'm not sure I'll need the 79 dollar disc but I will buy the 25 dollar one for my own tweaks since the warranty covers calibration at no charge to me./forums/images/icons/cool.gif
In the mean time I've been playing around with the sound system and moving speakers around to find that sweet spot. Planet of the Apes sure sounds a lot better in DD5.1 than Pro Logic that's for sure. The PSBs sound awesome.

Real estate, that's the ticket.
Actually... (head hung low) my 6000 box is on my 32 Plasma set at the moment. I need to install a multi switch to get the 5100, 6000 x 2 and an old 4500 for Muzak.
On the Plasma side of things.. Discovery Ch. was at my store on Thursday. They used us as a back drop for a show about DTV.. should air in Feb they tell me.

Cool, will we get to see your smiling puss on the boob tube then /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Trust me.. you don't want that.
Actually, they just took static shots of the Plasma and some other stuff. We were supposed to have a HD VTR sent in from HO... with some sort of Sony HD material for the screen image on the plasma. It never arrieved so we had BEV running. Now they have to get permission from BEV to air the content. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Are all Sony stores BEV dealers only?...No *Choice?

Sony store at Maisonville Mall in London does not sell dishes. Has no dish hooked up to HD sets - tries to sell them by showing DVD's. Everytime that I pass by, I tell them to get real . They tell potential customers to go over to the Sears store in same mall to see Sony HD via Star Choice.
They don't even have Sony ES products in this Sony store.
No *Choice.. just Bell.
Yes, it's true. Some stores don't have any dish. I guess it's a landlord issue. When we brought Bell on board we have to go through major hoops to get access to the roof.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but since Bell uses echostar equipment, wheren't Sony & Echostar 'enimies' in the SAT biz, considering that they still? make receivers for Direct TV.
/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif So it seems that perhaps BELL was a Moderator between the two parties at war with one another. An't that a kicker BELL the Mother of all enterprises being a go between /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.
PEACE UP TOM /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Nah.. we can all get along. If DTV is a product available to Sony Canada then I'm sure we wouldn't have Bell but that's not an option. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

...It seems that there are a lot of retailers that are BEV only.
IMO it would seem logical to offer both systems....BEV for the PVR + CI fans....*Choice for the audio freaks(like me)& free hockey fans. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

There are several retailers using Starchoice to showcase HD. Like the Brick, Sears, ABSound.

Some FS stores have both BEV and SC showcasing HD as well.
Is that correct, the sony warranty covers calibration for no charge?
snoman
10-08-2002, 6:37 PM
That's what the sales guy told me so I'm holding him to his word. I don't usually buy extended warranties but for the price a calibration I get an extra 2 years so I figured since I was going to have it calibrated anyway it seemed like a good idea. I told him I was going to have it done wether I thought it needed it or not.

$4495 was for last year's model, I've noticed that this years model is going for $5495 (Sony Store and Visions in Edmonton). Are we talking about the same set (57" 16:9 with DVI)?
pauldryan

If you can live without DVI, last year's model KP57HW40 is on sale at A&B Sound for $3888, according to today's newspaper flyer.

At least in Alberta you get a price break.....no PST like the rest of us. Did notice at the Bay in London today a number of WS sets on sale.....two day clearance sale.....the prices are starting to drop. Would expect some dandy deals after Christmas.

The impression I got was The Sony Store is the worst place to actually buy Sony products. A salesman there told me that they were not allowed to discount their products because it would create a conflict with other stores selling Sony products.
MCIBUS
10-10-2002, 4:11 AM
Maybe so, but then again you got sony products that are not avaible at your typical Audio/Video Store, and they got catologues that you can order Sony products that other stores won't order for you.Yes there prices might be slightly higher then other stores, but if needs to be repaired at least your going to get sony replacement compents for your sony product and not these no name compents from the 'MOM & POP SHOP'.
pauldryan

That's certainly a change from last December. There are two Sony Stores here in winnipeg, and both were heavily discounting when pressed.

Sony also has repair centers that are owned by Sony Canada. Doesn't matter where you buy the product. Any reputable, approved repair center will use OEM parts.

The Sony store I bought my gear from has discounted stuff. BTW the set arrived yesterday. Soooo sweet!!! Except for Enterprise on CKVU which looked like crap. Time to order Discovery Theatre for the sidecar./forums/images/icons/cool.gif

I think you are talking about the V series set WV500 instead of WS500. The WS still retails for $4495

It's a copy protection interface that looks kinda like a game port on a PC sound card designed to copy protect whatever HD your watching. In a nutshell you can watch it you just can't record it. The 921 PVR Echostar has uses the DVI so the only way anyone can use this PVR is with a tv with DVI input (like mine /forums/images/icons/cool.gif).
