Reading the American stories about satellite the last few days got me thinking about Telesat and BEV/SC customers.
First, DirecTv3 had a control failure. But since DirecTv had 4 satellites colocated; programming was quickly moved to another satellite.
Second was the announcement by Lockheed yesterday that they have started construction on AMC 15 & AMC 16. These are identical Ku/Ka satellites for SES . SES plans to start a North American band 2 way internet service from 105 degrees in 2004. They will use AMC 15, with AMC 16 as backup.
But what about Telesat and backups? It's no big deal for broadcasters and their clients. In case of a Telesat Anik/NIMIQ failure; they can quickly move to a C or Ku satellite owned by SES, Panamsat or Loral. But BEV/SC customers are screwed.
Telesat will be offering 2 way internet service from F2 ka with no backup. If I was a business user, I would certainly opt for a satellite internet provider with backup not Telesat.
