View Full Version : DD5.1 Still not working on Starchoice (Stuart L.)
Severe audio drop-outs with StarChoice still I see. Stuart Little not watchable on Starchoice HD (in the West anyways). They should fix it or give up some year soon. It's only been a problem for the past couple of years now! From the other recent posts regarding this problem, it seems like they don't even recognize they have a problem yet!
Perfect sound and picture for the same movie on BEV HD as usual.

Yes, it appears to be yet another Star Choice disaster on an ABC telecast. Maybe this is Star Choice's answer to the copy protection debate!
Let's hope that Alias and The Practice do not have similar problems. Those 2 programs have not had any problems of late. It seems to be just the movies that are a problem. And I am not sure it is a Doby Digital 5.1 problem as the commercials have the same dropouts and they are neither HD or 5.1 DD.

Unbelievable. First last night's debacle with "The Sixth Sense" and now this. I guess most of you are used to it, I just got my decoder on Wednesday and while I knew there had been some issues I never dreamed they were this bad. It reminds me of the old days with community access television on our local cable system. I wonder if I can find where that old cable connection was???
PS I'm getting both audio and video dropouts every minute or so here on the east coast.
Now, instead of Alias, I see that Starchoice have gone to the old PBS demo loop. Maybe they really have given up on DD5.1.
Alias is alive and well on BEV HD and DD5.1.

Star Choice abandoned Alias 14 minutes into the program, did not show The Practice and abandoned all attempts to repeat any ABC programming at a later time here on the west coast, even though it was on their IPG. Star Choice has a serious problem and I think it is time that I e-mailed my contacts at Star Choice in customer relations. When I was given the run around by my dealer who screwed up my original equipment purchase I called Star Choice and demanded the e-mail address of management. They quickly resolved my problems. I still have those e-mail addresses - I think it is time to use them again! I am a patient man, but there is a limit!

Why can't these guys get the job done?
They used to say HD problems would be solved with the switch to F1?
If E2 is the problem what can they do?
Stop selling them and give TMN HD free to the existing customers that they still have ? I dunno....but just an idea .
Glad I went to bed early and decided not to watch any tv yesterday... ! This sounds like it would have been bad for my blood pressure!
But seriously guys, there is a pattern to the difficulties on *C. Haven't you noticed that 90%+ of the problems happen during weekend shows?

It's unbelieveable. I've never really even commented on it because I dont have *C so I figure it's none of my business really. But I've had my 6000 for over a year and half so I've been reading about the *C issues for that whole time around here.
Could you imagine if those kind of issues affected all of their SD customers for so long instead of the very very small number of HD customers? They'd have had to shut their doors a year ago.
That wouldn't be a bad idea, but I don't think Astral will go along with that!
But they could give away the network HD programming they have on and not force us to take a package to receive HD. I wouldn't feel as bad (and be as mad /forums/images/icons/frown.gif ) if I didn't have to pay $$ for the "privilege" of being a beta tester for them!
funny, Saturn (GMC) has been using the public as Beta testers for over 10 years now!
they still can't get it right!
how old is Starchoice HDTV?
I can remember the tv comercial where Mike Robinson was touting it in front of all those Samsung and Toshiba displays (and Paradigm loudspeakers).

You have to wonder why I have no problem with HBO using the same equipment.
I think they should do a test on F1 and see if the problem goes away. Maybe they already know where the problem is and find themselves in a no win situation.

I don't see OTA viewers of WXYZ-DT complaining on avsforum about sound problems lately.
Perhaps SC should contact the engineers at Thomson, or Hughes and find out which DirecTv/OTA receiver they need to buy to fix this once and for all - or is the problem with the SC encoders?
Or the problem is with the "New and Improved" E2? And that's not about to be fixed is it??

Star Choice is going to be launching Anik F2 later this year. Will that solve the problem????

Apples and oranges. *C is goofing up in identifying and mapping the tracks from another source.
HBO and SHO are showing their own material. I'll confirm that I've never had a problem with HBO and SHO HD sound, other than a real occasional dropout.

Well that solves it, *C will have to sell it's apples and buy oranges. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Ha! You're kidding right? Things are looking worst by the day for the future of HD from *C!! F2 will be very, very late and will not launch this year. The new launch date is sometime in June 2003. And as we all know, satellites are rarely launched and delivered as scheduled. Don't expect F2 to be in service before the Fall of 2003.
Perhaps you havent seen this thread Bob?

Notting Hill will be playing tonight... anyone want to take bets whether the same drop-outs will occur?
Miles
No, tonight's programming from ABC will be glitch free. I promise. Just watch /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Thanks for the info. If the problems with the picture and sound are related to E2 that is really bad news! I know that I will not wait that long to see the problems solved with ABC - I will switch! And I don't like the problems with F1. That doesn't sound too good either.
OK, so I was wrong! You can't be an optimist and a *C customer it seems.

I just noticed that a VC movie on channel 236 is listed as DD5.1..
This is the first time I have noticed a DD5.1 program on VC..
But I don't purchase PPV's so I might have just not been aware of previous ones..
