Great news! Of course now the question is, who will be carrying it? No mention yet.

About a month ago , when this HD forum was a little quite , it was said that perhaps HD was getting a little stale. It was suggested the the novelty was wearing off.I had said at the time that about every month or so some new comes up.As evident with this news release , thing are moving along quickly and before you know it Quality, your C-FOX will be in HD. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Discovery Readies HDTV Channel
On June 17, Discovery will launch Discovery HD Theater,
a new 24-hour network that will transmit high-definition
programming featuring some of its top content.
Discovery said it has more than 115 HDTV titles ready
for transmission and new productions have been
commissioned to support the new service. The June debut
coincides with the 17th anniversary of the Discovery
Channel's first transmission in 1985.
Discovery HD Theater will be offered to cable systems,
satellite providers and other multichannel distribution
systems. It will reside on Satcom 4, Transponder 14.
The HDTV digital signal will be delivered in 1080i
high-definition resolution.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this channel have to get CRTC approval before anyone in Canada can show it (right now, we get a Canadianized version of Discovery Channel)

Expressvu has no room for more HD and SC hasn't quite figured out how to properly use what they already have on a consistant basis.
BTW; I read the Discovery Press release - hope that was a typo when they mention 3 mhz data stream

It has already been said on the Delphi 4DTV Forum that the DCII bouquet on this transponder is already "off-limits" to 4DTV viewers. That essentially means that the Discovery HD channel is in DCII, but probably unreceiveable by 4DTV owners.

You're 100% correct on both counts.

Right Discovery has less than 250 hours of HD programming in the vault at this time. If they are going to provide the HD service with present Discovery subscriptions - great; but to pay extra I don't think it will survive long with so little new content

I have no reason to suspect that a person will have to pay extra for it. Theres nothing to suggest that. But first things first.. we need to find out exactly who will be carrying it to begin with.

According to Lyngsat, TP14 has a symbol rate of 29,270 and 3/4 FEC, so that gives a symbol rate of 2439 for this service. And the payload would be????

I wouldn't be too sure about that since the entire Discovery suite on C3 is available for subscription. I'm sure Discovery Networks would see to it's availability to 4DTV owners.

Yes they have always been very good about not getting into bed with Charlie & Dave in order to stick it to the BUD & cable viewers.
Of course, we can't say the same about Mr. Cuban.

I cannot predict the future, however as I mentioned, this bouquet is inaccessible to 4DTV viewers already. I am hoping the new HD channel is available to 4DTV owners, but I won't be surprised if it's not. Nothing good ever seems to happen with the 4DTV lately...

Well with Diwreck TV on one hand paying kings ransoms to keep channels exclusive to them and Dish Networthless bribing C Band uplinkers and providers (YSP for one) on the other it's no wonder 4DTV is struggling but the numbers are encouraging nonetheless. Since the sidecar's dramatic price drop 4DTV activations have started taking off.

Bring 'em on! Anything to drum up some interest in DCII on C-Band to attract new program providers/uplinkers.
