It's been reported over at DBSForums that it IS possible to put larger than a 40gb drive in a DISH 501. Thus far it appears that it will ONLY work if you start with a VIRGIN receiver that still has the FACTORY software installed. It APPEARS that the receiver marries to the HD when the software is installed and it does the initial drive format. Thus far a 501 (40gb) has had an 80gb drive inserted and it picked it up and even shows the unit as being a 508 (the just released E* uinit). If anyone has the ability to test this on a 5100, it could be interesting (5800 anyone??)

What are the specs on the hard drives it takes? This would be marvellous if it is true... I just bought a 5100 for my parents and would love to upgrade the drive.

Upgrading DirecTiVos is a very popular thing. People have as much as 200 hours or more I believe.
