For some reason My Post was removed....
I'll start from scratch again...
Someone asked me If they could take the Digital audio output
from a STARCHOICE receiver and feed it in the Audio input of a VCR and Record the Digital audio
and then when playing the movie, the Audio output (Digital) in the Digital Input from the Pioneer amp and listen to AC5.1 audio..
I told the guy who asked me that question that I would have to get back to him on this!
Could This Work?
Personnaly I don't think so.
thank you

In a word... no.
Digital audio output (whether from a StarChoice receiver or anything else, like a DVD player) is a digital bit stream, not an analogue audio signal. I don't know if anything, the VCR would record horrible noise or nothing at all, but it definitely wouldn't record the audio in a way that could be decoded by his amp.
The DishNetwork/ExpressVu PVR records 5.1, but apart from that I don't know of any way for consumers to record Dolby 5.1 along with video, regardless of the source. Even my DVD burning software only handles Dolby 2.0, and the signal still needs to be decoded to analog and re-encoded.
Personally, going from Dolby 5.1 to Dolby Pro-Logic by recording to a hi-fi VCR doesn't bother me nearly as much as the picture degradation anyway.
If StarChoice introduces a similarly integrated PVR, it should record 5.1 as well. A standalone will not.

SonicBlue has licenced Samsung to produce a low cost DVD/DVR combo for scheduled fall 2002 release

But will it be able to take a digital output and record it?

it make sence...
putting Digital AC5.1 into the audio part of the tape...
and the same coded audio back in the Amp....
I would have to experiment that one...
anyone else got the Ball* to try it!..

I think newbie nailed it. The VCR might be able to record an analogue representation of the bitstream, but you would need to have an analogue to digital converter to be able to feed the bitstream back into your DD decoder. Even if that was done, I wonder what shape the bitstream would be in.
