I was wondering are their any black outs on Sportsnet and CBC channels on Bell ExpressVu for Edmonton Oilers games? And if so how many times are the edmonton oilers games blacked out? thanks

This is for the most part a regional issue. CBC Saturday games are available on the local broadcast channel without interference from Bev. Sportsnet depends on where you live. Post your location and maybe somebody from your area will respond.

CBC games are never blacked out anywhere. They own the national broadcast rights for weekend games, so the teams have no say in blacking them out.

For SportsNet, as TV Watcher says, it depends on where you live, and the game. SportsNet does have national broadcast rights to some of the games, and those will not blacked out. Most of the Oilers games that SN broadcasts, however, are local broadcasts, so they are blacked out everywhere except in the region "owned" by the Oilers. Certianly, here in Ontario, the local SN broadcasts of OIlers' games are blacked out, although they are available on the NHL-CI package.

The Sportsnet blackouts are independent of the supplier, rather they are set by NHL

I live in the Edmonton region. And I thought I heard that even if your in the edmonton region, with bev, you might have some games still blacked out. Is this correct? So I guess it is the same as SC. thanks

In the Edmonton region, you'll get all the same Oilers games with Bell Expressvu as you would with Shaw cable. The only potential blackout would be when the Oilers are playing another Canadian team and there's only one broadcast that's considered local to the other team. For example, I'm not sure if it even occurs this season, but a Oilers-Leafs game on TSN would be considered a 'local' Leafs broadcast and blacked-out outside South Central Ontario.

OK now to answer your SC question SC has NO blackouts of any kind on any locals period. Only on Sportsnet and TSN.

I was just wondering if BEV had any blackouts for Oilers games if you live in the edmonton region. I know that SC has no blackouts what so ever. I just wondered if it was the same thing with BEV? thanks

Last Friday Edmonton was playing Dallas and the game was blacked out in my area(Calgary). I thought that only the other regions experienced blackouts when a game was on sportsnet west. What's the deal with that.

They sometimes black out Edmonton games in Calgary when the Flames are playing at home, as they were Friday.

Express Vu doesn't black any games out. They only do what the NHL and the individual teams tell them to do. The Ottawa Senators have lifted most of the blackouts for Centre Ice subscribers in their territory but Calgary and Edmonton have decided not to. If you don't like it, call the Flames and Oilers.

Andrew, yes Bev does black out games that are shown on *C and local digital cable (Timmins, On). Senator games that are allowed by NHL rules to be shown are only not available on Bev. It is Bev's way of 'encouraging' subscribers to purchase NHLCI.

So basically I should stick with SC for free Oilers games. Otherwise if I switch to BEV I would not get all oilers games for free without blackouts. Now I'm getting confused.

The CI on DTV has more games and better PQ than BEV this year

Give me some examples of EVu blacking out games that were available on SC or Rogers.

That still doesn't mean it is EVu that is doing it. Who's territory is Timmins in? It's the Leafs isn't it? For EVu to have NHLCI they have to follow the NHL's rules which are to blackout out-of-market games. If Rogers in Timmins offers Centre Ice and they showed the Sens game that night then they screwed up by showing it. SC showed the game because they don't have Centre Ice. If they did then you wouldn't have seen the game on CHRO either. It is the NHL and the individual teams that decide the blackouts. Not EVu, SC or any cableco. EVu might be pushing the buttons but they are doing it because the league is telling them to.

"That still doesn't mean it is EVu that is doing it"...
Well does it really matter "who" is doing it... Point is, if you don't spend $200 (advertised price) on NHLCI with Bev, some games that otherwise come at no additional charge on *C or cable are not shown ie. "BLACKED-OUT" on Bev. For someone trying to make a purchasing decision based on potential hockey coverage, it is rather important to consider how Bev deals with it, no matter who may be forcing their hand. By the way I ponied up the $100 + tax Bev asked for NHLCI in late December... The main reason I got Bev was for the NHLCI and the American out of market games not locally available with any other service.

The way I look at NHL-CI is, with the cost of going to games, CI costs the equivalent of going to 4 games, and you don't have to deal with parking (worse, leaving), lousy overpriced concession food, people constantly coming and going during play, etc., etc., etc. And with my PVR, I can pause the game, make my own replays, start watching the game late and skip the intermissions. So, overall, I would say that NHL-CI is great value for the hockey fan.

All in all, pretty much the same conditions as if I invite you over to my place to watch it.
