Anyone out their with Rogers Digital in the Toronto area notice WNYO 49 is now on . PQ is superb. Better than the PQ of WPIX as they are both WB affiliates.

StarChoice should apply to the CRTC to add this channel.

They won't get approval. Rogers was only granted approval for systems where WNYO can be received OTA. There are numerous other situations where this is the case - all the Cleveland channels in the St. Thomas, Ontario area + Detroit WB and UPN stations in the Windsor area

Don't forget KVOS, KSTW and KTZZ in Seattle.

I'm sure Expressvu could offer it to their Toronto area customers. Rogers is offering it free with the Digital Box. Its the first time that WB is available without having to purchase an expensive package.

There are ways around the rules. For example, when I first got cable I had Buffalo and Rochester feeds for ABC and CBS but not for NBC. Finally, by offering it on the extended basic tier with TSN and MuchMusic etc. were they able to offer WGRZ.

Also, when the CRTC allows one cableco to add a channel then all the others are also allowed. And since ExpressVu has to play by the same rules as Rogers, thanks to Pirate Ted and his "Death Star" scare mongering and EVu's desire to add WNYO maybe it will happen.

What I want to know is, are they ever going to add digital versions of the many channels that today are only in analog??

I'm sure they'd love to do away with the analogue channels altogether, but that's just not in the cards. From a business perspective, why take up valuable bandwidth duplicating what's already there?

Maybe I'm just jaded since my analogue's are quite clean!

This is interesting.I did some back checking from my VU mags and in the Sept. 1999 issue BEV applied to be able to carry KSTW-UPN out of Seattle and WYNO-WB out Buffalo, they where to add it to there Network package the one in they had in 1999.Now I guess they weren't approved considering there not on BEV to this day.

It was refused by the CRTC, along with a Rogers application to add WNYO during the same period.

I would think that Satellite would be able to apply to carry this channel for Toronto-area viewers only. But as they don't seem to have a system in place, to verify the physical location of their downlinks, I can see that this may be difficult to approbve. Also, neither of them seem to have enough channel capacity to carry all the current channels, without thinking of adding even more OTA signals.

Expressvu is definitely approved to carry KSTW but for some reason they decided not to offer it.

Answer: To stop steady and increasing erosion of their market share. At least in my Toronto neighborhood where another dish
appears almost weekly now (though dishes still an exception).
I'd take a serious look at digital cable if it digitized the other analogs and they had a pvr. They already got the HD lead!

Au contraire mon amie.
With 2 birds SC has plenty of bandwidth, they're just to cheap to use it properly.

Expressvu should pull a counter move and add KSTW immediately to their lineup. We need a west coast UPN affiliate and nobody else offers one.

The CRTC has allowed OTA US channels, outside of the 4+1, only in geographical areas where there the additional US signal has a significant OTA Canadian audience. Look at how many times, that they turned down Channel 23 Buffalo when it was the secondary PBS outlet

Bell/SC will not even apply for 3 reasons

1) If the CRTC approved such an application, it would only be for a small geographical area

2) These added US OTA's would not add revenue, only take up space on birds, cost money to uplink

3) Revenue would fall as the number of "Superstations" subs would fall further. The "Superstations" are loosing more & more of their individuality each year. Some are not much more than WB/UPN repeaters now
