Hello everyone,

I have a Toshiba 32HFX71 HDTV ready. I also have a Panasonoic RP56 DVD player. I am looking to buy a Sound system. My family room is almost 7x4. I heard that there is new models of home SS with THX technology, I do not know what that is. I will appreciate any input.

THX is just a stamp of George Lucas' approval. THX amps are usually not much different than a regular DD/DTS amp....other than a huge price difference. I've listened to THX amp before and there is no big difference.
If I was you, i'd look at getting a reasonably priced DD/DTS amp with the new Dolby Pro-logic 2 in it... i've heard they are amazing and well affordable.

Is it better to get a receiver seperatly or get the in box one.

that is a good question. I know my experience is that Box systems usually suck..they have crappy speakers or a crappy amp[vice-versa]. I find that you get a way better deal by buying each component seperately... That way there you get each component that you want and its easier to deal "negotiate a lower price" for the stuff cause you'll be taking good overall system. Salemen love to talk components and $$$.......just feel free to say can we bargain here....i do it at futureshop all the time!

I agree the sale people are very persistent in trying to get you to buy lots of stuff.

TV- Sony Wega 32" KV-32FS13 DVD- Pioneer 343
AMP- Poineer 710S Speakers- 2 Nuance star4ms, center, 2 surround. I found my sound/HT system is pretty good. The only things that I would change would be the star 4ms to a 200W subwoofer that as 1 tweater and 4 subs so that the sound would be more balanced through the subwoofers, and I would change my DVD player for a progressive scan, and eventually a HDTV. Other than that I'm very happy with my sound system.

I was surprised at how loud my system can get. I like fact that I probably could blow out the windows in the living room. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

On average what do you guys think I should spend for a reasonable sound system.

Dollars don't matter, but put 1/2 of the total towards your front three speakers (rule of thumb for complete purchase that has worked well for me). Talking list price here.

About $3000 to $6000 dollars. But it's up to you to decide what's best and what you like in a sound system. What I would do is go to a sound system place such as International stereo and compare different sound systems. Make sure you buy good wire such as Phoenix Gold. For the subwoofer(s) be sure to get 1 or 2 the balances out the sound. For example I have Nuance Star 4Ms powered subwoofers. They each have 1 tweater and 3 subs, it sounds really good, but the sound is not as balanced out as it could be. With 1 tweater and 4 subs for the powered subwoofer(s). Than it would be more balanced out and sound better. But I agree, most of your money should be spent on the front 3 speakers. ALso make sure that your powered subwoofers don't drown out your surround speakers.

I love my system for what it does, but please keep in mind what mine & yours may NOT be able to do.

It's great to hear Arnold blasting "hasta la vista, baby" out of 5 very loud speakers, but only if it's before 10:30 p.m. on any given day.

My problem is watching a movie at 2:30 a.m. at reasonable levels for myself and the neighbours.

That's why I live in a semi-rural area, where the houses are a little more spaced out. I can watch any movie at any time, and it won't bother my neighbours a bit.

I live on a farm so it doesn't matter if I listen to anything loud. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
