View Full Version : Stern's Gamble Pays Off Big Time

Sirius turned over stock worth $220 million to Howard Stern yesterday, because the actual increase in subscriptions had more than doubled the projections originally anticipated with his signing. At the end of 2004 they had 1.1 million subs; one year later they have 3.3 million paying subscribers. Should Stern get all the credit? At least he's shrewd enough to collect on it, whether deserved or not.

That's the year one payment in advance I believe of a five year, $500 million contract that could be worth twice that if the growth rate continues to climb.

Wow ...... Maybe he really is the "King of all media."

He was on Larry King last night discussing his move to Sirius and talking about how the show will be different from his old FM days.

He actually has 2 channels. The main one sounds like it will mostly be replays of the current days show while the other channel will consist of other talk shows tht he has control over.

Can't wait to listen to his first show monday morning. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Question about Stern. If You are on the canada package do you still get Stern and the CBC's?
A co-worker has Stern and No CBC's, does that mean that He really is in the US group.

Stern isn't available on a Cdn sub. (yet anyway)

US subs get Stern and a couple CBC's.

Ok, so if he was Stern, he has a US sub not canada sub.

The US Sirius service has five of the ten CDN channels. If he has the two Stern channels (Howard 100 and 101) he should also be getting a North Anerican version of CBC Radio One, Radio Three, Iceberg Radio and a couple of French channels.

I think Howard 100 is the channel his show will be on and I think that starts on Monday.

After watching Stern on Larry King tonight his voice sure sounds like Alan Alda. Switched it to MASH afterwards and swear you can't tell them apart blindfolded.

I've listened to his show on the way to work since monday.

The addition of George Takei (Mr Sulu)to the cast is good. /forums/images/graemlins/tup.gif

I'm going through Stern withdrawal here. Haven't had a chance to go to the US or shop ebay for a US receiver. Really not sure when I'll find the time, but another week of horrible Toronto morning radio may force me to take a day off and do the Buffalo shuffle sooner than later.

Looks like Mr Sulu was just a guest announcer for this week. This morning was his last show.

Too bad, he has a pretty good sense of humour.

When will Stern be avaible in Canada? according to Stern Sirrius and Newsorp parted ways because of Stern being on Sirius. Stern had some guy from Faux News on the other day. and Stern said why you had some guy on Faux spreading lies about me.

According to the Toronto Star, Sirius Canada will add Howard to it's lineup next Monday morning /forums/images/graemlins/tup.gif

Guess I better figure out how the channel locks work on my receiver.

Yessssss!

Glad that I don't have to go through all the hoops to get US service. This should really drive the Sirius service in Canada. I'm going receiver shopping tomorrow before the rush.

I don't think you'll automatically have the channel added to your servive. You'll probably have to call in and have it added the same way SC handled the free preview of Out Tv.

In spite of the best efforts of the CRTC, this is a victory of the real (grey) free market. The distorted Canadian market was forced to compete. /forums/images/graemlins/tup.gif

Of course, we'll know for sure on Monday, but based on the press release, it looks like it will be the opposite - everyone gets Stern and if you don't want "Howard 100", you call Sirius Canada and have it blocked on your radio(s).

Also, here's an interesting comment about competition from, of all people, a CBC bureaucrat:

"Yes, we're partners and Sirius Canada made the decision that was right for it based on what the market demands."

CBC admits to qualms about role in Howard Stern's return to Canada (http://www.canada.com/topics/entertainment/story.html?id=01b9883c-3e1c-4b78-9235-53820d9b6000&k=91218)

I think you're right now. Too bad they don't do it by request though. I'm sure it would save them a lot of grief in the long run.
