What are you talking about? A handful of people, including myself, have the DSR500 already and are very happy with it.
Keep poking in and out of your favourite retailer... you may get lucky and find one.

I have a retailer that could have one for me.
How's your receiver doing? Did they get all the bugs out?
Could you please confirm that it sends out HD and SD at the same time. Does it downconvert the HD channels to a 4:3 letterbox standard def signal?
Does it have the OTA tuner that the Voom receivers have?
Thanks

That's a definite no.

Any way of adding one?
Possibly via the ethernet or USB ports? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Pretty soon it won't need to, since all new sets will be required to carry the OTA tuner necessary to decode digital signals. The manufacturers lost their appeal and the FCC requirement stands. Appeals Court upholds FCC rule on digital TV (http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/business/articles/1029natwldbrfs29.html)
The makers of TVs, VCRs and DVD players tried to block the Federal Communications Commission rule, saying it would make sets more expensive and was unnecessary because cable and satellite viewers don't need the tuners.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit sided with the FCC, which said the requirement was needed because the industry was not moving quickly enough to make tuners available.
The tuners will be needed to receive over-the-air broadcasts after the nation switches from analog to digital signals. Congress has set a goal of December 2006 for the change.
Paul
It does send out both SD and HD at the same time. It sends out a SD letterbox version of a HD channel. Not all the bugs are out yet but apparently the software writers have been working overtime to get everything fixed. All in all good machine. Much better then other SC recievers. PQ on all channels are good HD channels outstanding.

The thing is that I have the option of buying one today. Do I get it or wait for a more 'fixed' version?

Even if you buy it today, you will receive the software upgrade as they become available.

It looks like the echostar way of sending out bugy new IRDs is prefered to nothing new.
And for those that don't like it, they can wait.
Yes, but then I'd need to buy another television set and that's not an option, and it still won't be by 2007.

Well I will agree with JRB on this one. Most of the programming I've watched has been VIRTUALLY glitch free and oh by the way aside from the dirt cheap used purchase price of my HDD201 IT WAS FREE and legal.

No, I'm sure the problems with the DSR-500s will eventually be fixed. Just don't expect that they will be problem-free if you get them now. There is now ample evidence (much more than one unit btw) on N.A. satellite forums that Motorola rushed these receivers to market. The plethora (3 Amigos! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif) of software revisions that are being frantically downloaded to the receivers, both here and in the US, should be a cause for concern.
Now, how a company can "rush" something to market and still take 2 years to develop a product is beyond me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The problem with waiting for something better to come along means you might never get one.Something "better" is always coming down the pipe.
I think the "wait" is a matter of a few weeks, 2 months tops. Go for it!

I see DishNetwork has a new 500 series receiver that has a 120 GB hard drive giving close to 100 hours of recording time. Perhaps BEV is getting it. Hopefully the long awaited BEV 6000 replacement is on its way. (Holding breath, turning blue...)

The minimum sub to get the HD package at BEV is "Super 7" costing $41.00 monthly. The minimum charge to get the HD channels on StarChoice is "Bronze" costing $23.99 monthly.
There is no free lunch offered by either company, but the offering from Bell is decidedly more expensive, $19.38 monthly, after taxes in Manitoba.

It may not be a free lunch but in my case HD cost nothing extra (on *C) and I got the upsampling provided by the HDD201 which alllows the elimination of an outboard scaler/PC in my FP setup.
Another HDD201 bonus over Beav er I mean Bev. The Hdd201 O/Ps H+V sync along with RGB. Can Beav make this claim?
I think not.

I was looking at the specs for this unit. I don't see any reference to a DVI output. I see no point in buying any new video equipment that does not have DVI connections.
Many new display devices already have DVI inputs and all new display devices in the near future are going to have them. You are going to sacrific PQ if your source equipment does not have DVi out.

I agree it is disapointing that there is not a DVI output, especially since Motorola's cable DCT-5100 does have this output. However I am impressed with the rest of the DSR-500 receiver (had one for 24 hours and counting)compared to other satellite receivers currently available. In my situation the sole DVI input on my JVC HDTV is reserved for the arrival of a FTA IT912 satellite receiver.
