CBS HDTV Coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics???

I certainly hope that Vancouver/Whistler's successful bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics gives CBC the incentive to purchase the necessary equipment in the next 7 years to broadcast those games in HDTV. Certainly NBC will be. However, CBC has a history of doing much better coverage of the Olympics. It would be awesome if they added HDTV to that coverage. Come on CBC ... do Canada proud ... broadcast the 2010 games in HDTV!

Better yet - start acquiring the equipment now and have all the bugs ironed out way before 2010. How about HNIC in HD by 2006?

The only reason channels like Global, CH and CTV will go HDTV is for simsub purposes, which they will probably screw up and create a lot of angry consumers. These channels will also waste bandwith. CBC has every incentive to start broadcasting in digital widescreen and HDTV, particularily because most programmes they are are homegrown, and hockey will look great in HDTV. I have some friends who wanted to watch CBC during the playoffs, but watched ABC because it was in HD. Also, Coronation Street and Emmerdale from ITV in the UK and the BBC's Antiques Roadshow are widescreen already.

Since Vancouver has won the 2010 bid, CBC will be the host broadcaster. As such they will be responsible for the HD broadcast.
